i can only handle so much socializing until i get tired and start getting irritated towards everyone and want to go home and sleep or lock myself in my room and go on the computer
I find Tumblr's tendency to group PoC into that one group, PoC, more frequently than talking about individual groups, as if PoC is one group of people, instead of many cultures that cover most of the planet, to be strange and generalizing, even when used for just the U.S. . I am white, so I can't really comment on how it affects me on a personal level because it doesnt, but it seems that it could be potentially harmful. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this. Feel free to ignore this.
I honestly hate the term PoC, because it’s annoyingly over generalized.
It’s like… there’s two categories of race “white” and “colored”, which is annoying because I’m brown. I’m brown of Arab, Turk, and Iranian descent. I have an identity but these people who think it is a very good term don’t realise how it erases much of my identity.
The use the term ‘PoC’ outside of its intended context is extremely ignorant. You can’t call all non-whites of the world PoC. That is like going to Africa and calling the black people there “minorities”. Yes, of course they may still suffer a terrible oppression, but to say it is specifically because they are a certain race/color/ethnicity is so so SO wrong. I’m not saying that it ISN’T for that reason, I am saying it is not for that reason EVERYWHERE.
I am of mixed Arab and ‘white’ ethnicities. I’ve lived in Saudi Arabia and the US. In Saudi, we wouldn’t call ourselves persons of color because then it would apply to everyone. But as soon as I am in the US I am painted with this term.
In Saudi, the oppression doesn’t happen because ~omg evil white people!! It happens because of Saudis who govern their own country, and I’m sick of this mass ignorant lie that non-white people can do no evil or if they do, it’s secretly because of white people’s influence.
The way some Saudis treat their maids & other ‘lowly’ workers (who tend to be South Asians) IS slavery. Things that would send you straight to jail in America are still perfectly common there. Oppression isn’t black and white.
